Antioch Arrow - Gems of Masochism

Amalgamated Recording Corp [1995]

Just picked up a copy of this record yesterday and let me tell you, it was $3.00 well spent (thank you. oh god of Portland, for your always bountiful used record harvest). Not only does this puppy have the best cover artwork ever (I mean, look at it...), but the content is undoubtedly the bands most ambitious and interesting work.
Antioch Arrow we're one of the elite members San Diego's post punk/ emocore/ art scene of the mid 90's. During the time, the area was exploding with creativity and musical output, competing only with Providence for the title of most pretentious (and utterly enthralling) nothing city in the country. Antioch Arrow always stood out to me as one of the best (and most mis-labeled) bands to come out of this era. Like Heroin, they are often lumped into the "frantic emo/screamo" (or even more asinine, "emo-violence") genres that were so prevalent at the time. To me, Antioch Arrow was a creative hardcore (or "post-hardcore".... whatever) band. More in the vein of bands like Born Against. Ranting, aggressive, disjointed hardcore. This album is a stretch from even that. We are talking sexy waves of jumbled, quasi-gothic art punk, complete with piano. It's feels like the soundtrack to a nightclub that was built into the underbelly of a castle. No "screamo" here folks.
